Interests and Rules in the Regulation of Armed Conflict. In this project I show how an appreciation of four different conceptual approaches to the law of armed conflict can help us understand the relationship between state interests and the problems of enforcement and verification. Derived from a game-theoretic understanding of the relationship between interests and incentives in a non-cooperative setting, this conceptual approach can help us see how to craft rules that are more likely to be effective. Chapters include: Introduction, the Protection of non-Combatants, the 1980 Geneva Convention, the Control of Chemical and Biological Weapons, the Control of Land Mines, Submarines and War, and Conclusions.
Athens, Sparta, and the Politics of the Past. This is a study of the ways in which historical memory is used to support national identity. The project is based on comparative research on the widely differing ways in which the story of the Peloponnesian War has been taught in different cultures and at different times.
